Experts warn troubling gap of supply for demand in positions will follow
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2013 -- Small businesses within the United Kingdom have found themselves in an growth holding pattern due to the lack of talent available in the IT sector. There are simply not enough workers who have attained the proper IT skills in order to fill the positions needed.
Both the Corporate IT Forum of Education and Skills, as well as the insurance provider Simply Business have published reports addressing the issue of IT skill shortcoming that faces the UK.
The commission's findings have noted an array of causes for the shortfall, and note that the effects are felt across half of the large IT-dependent organizations.
These problems can range from outsourcing policy concerns to the aging workforce. The insufficient understanding of IT skills necessary, and what the general work entales, simply has a large spread effect on the entire industry.
“Employment in the IT industry is expected to grow at nearly five times the UK average over the next decade. Yet, careers support and education for young people interested in pursuing a career in IT is in disarray.
The British government recently passed a statutory duty to provide career guidance for individuals entering the field. However, the Commission stated it was concerned by “requirement of schools to meet the costs of provision from their overall budget and the lack of guidance on minimum investment levels,” says John Harris, Commission chairman and vice president of global enterprise architecture at AIMIA.
The report had focused on school years, finding that IT education was simply not in proper order. There are 20 recommendations for education, careers guidance, and development of IT curriculum.
Harris stated he was worried, and if the direction of IT education remains on its current course, a widening skills-gap would be felt in the UK compared to other countries.
“Without the right careers guidance and curriculum there is a danger that in the short-term the situation will only get worse, with employers forced to recruit outside of the UK to fill the gap. Unless immediate action is taken we will have whole swathes of the current generation of schoolchildren who are simply not IT literate enough to function in an increasingly digital world.”
