Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/18/2016 -- Sergiy Berezenko, 32, Ukraine Member of Parliament from the president's fraction ('Block Petro Poroshenko') in February along with other Ukrainian politicians attended the International Lunch, one of the events related to the National Prayer Breakfast with US President Barack Obama in Washington.
After the lunch, Sergiy Berezenko gave a brief interview to the TV show 'Chas-Time. Voice of America' (a TV show for Ukrainians in the US and everywhere in the world), where he was called a representative of the 'new generation' in Ukraine.
Ukrainian journalists noticed a sudden rise of Ukrainian Member of Parliament on TV on the eve of the scandal occurred, 3 February.
Then the Minister of Economics of Ukraine Aivaras Abromavicius, whose name in Europe and the United States is associated with the possibility of promising reforms in Ukraine, made a loud statement about the resignation, accusing the Member of Parliament Igor Kononenko, a close friend of the president, on the political pressure, corruption and blocking reforms.
Sergiy Berezenko in Ukrainian politics is considered one of the closest allies of Igor Kononenko, and in fact his 'right hand'. That is why in an interview to 'Chas-Time. Voice of America' Berezenko tried to enhance the reputation of Igor Kononenko, strongly defending him and noting that the Minister Aivaras Abromavicius should not have bring into public the facts on corruption and blocking reforms.
However, Sergiy Berezenko himself and his family in Ukraine lots of times were accused of corruption, laundering of public funds, illegal acquisition of large plots of land in the recreation areas in Kiev etc. The commercial structures affiliated with Berezenko, received benefits without complying with bidding procedures and in violation of the law. The facts and evidence were published in Ukrainian media by politicians and journalists.
Ukrainian society is also outraged by the fact that at the time when Sergiy Berezenko headed the State Directorate for Affairs (DUS), he employed as a deputy a business partner of his cousin, and his closest friend. During his tenure as head of DUS young politician had time to prepare the documents for the 'quiet' the privatization of several governmental companies, so they will soon be sold for a pittance to people close to Berezenko.
In addition, Sergiy Berezenko in his attempts to become a Member of Parliament, led one of the dirtiest political campaigns in the history of Ukraine, using bribery, administrative resource etc.
Last October, the Deputy Prosecutor General Vitaliy Kasko said that he received recommendations from Igor Kononenko about how to represent the position of the government on those elections in favour to Berezenko.
The criminal case opening against Sergiy Berezenko and his companions by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) is just a matter of time. Especially in regard to his major patron Igor Kononenko, against whom NABU has already launched an investigation after the recent scandal with Aivaras Abromavicius' resign.
