San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2013 -- There has been a restocking of supply closets for classrooms at the Temple's College of Education, as well as the university's Computer Recycling Center.

Last month, 15 former students, who recently graduated, were able to pick up folders, binders, construction paper, and other essentials for their classrooms as part of the Supply Swap project put on by the Computer Recycling Center.

The project was held at the CRC's offices within the University TECH Center, with the Supply Drive Reception being offered as a way to assist those teachers who needed basic supplies in order to provide their community with the quality teaching services.

“Most schools cover just the cost of basic necessities for their classrooms, so teachers need to dip into their own pockets to supplement the cost for special materials, decorations and other crafts,” said Maggie Esteves, development associate in the Office of Institutional Advancement, who helped organize the reception. “It was really special to watch the teachers not only share supplies, but also share with one another creative and exciting uses for the ordinary materials in the center.”

The supply swap is all part of Temple's ongoing attempt to reduce the overall waste. The center collects many unused office supplies from varying university offices, and allows other faculty, staff, and even administrators to utilize the otherwise discarded surplus.

CRC director Jonathan Latko stated that the overall goal is to redirect unwanted supplies into useful supplies:“This project is built around the three Rs of sustainability: reduce, reuse and recycle. We hope to reduce the need for new office supplies by reusing surplus items before recycling those that can no longer be used,” he said. “Connecting with the College of Education’s Young Alumni Council for this day of service was a great way to see our mission through. These Temple alumni are in the elementary classrooms where these resources can benefit the youth in the community.”
