“Vote No” was painted on properties, garage doors to influence their decision making
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/15/2012 -- Police stated that vandals defaced signs opposing a marriage amendment as well as painting graphic images on homeowners’ doors in Blaine, Minnesota.
The vandals utilized black spray paint and painted over the “Vote No” on the signs and in particular instances painted pictures of male and female genitals on garage doors, says Blaine Police Chief Chris Olsen.
"Calls started coming in about it this morning," Olson said Tuesday, Oct 2.
Overall, nine homes were targeted in the vandalism spree. Each was located near Radisson Road or 132nd Lane or near Lakes Parkway and 120th Court.
“People need to leave other people’s property alone, whether or not they agree with them,” Olson said.
The proposal that is causing so much trouble is a proposed state constitutional amendment on Nov. 6 ballot would prohibit same-sex marriage in Minnesota.
It is very likely that the incidents were “bias-motivated” said Olson. He suspects that it would likely be a charge of criminal damage to property when the vandals are caught. Of course, the extent of damage could range from a misdemeanor to a felony.
"The yard signs aren't worth much, but homeowners will have to take a look at the damage to their garages. ... If you get into repainting or replacement, obviously the dollar amount goes up quite a bit, where we could be talking about a gross misdemeanor to a felony," Olson said.
As of yet, the police have no suspects and are asking for any individuals to contact them.
