Hanoi, Vietnam -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/26/2013 -- On September 13th in Jakarta, Indonesia, the third Asia Expat Pool Challenge takes place and for the first time Saigon have entered a team. The first year featured Jakarta playing Bangkok in Jakarta and last year these two teams were joined by Shanghai when the event was held in the Thailand capital city. It has grown substantially from modest beginnings and this year the three teams are joined by Singapore, Manilla and a team from the Vietnamese southern city of Saigon.
The tournament is for expats only so no team is allowed to contain a player born in the country of the represented city. It is interesting that Singaporeans will be playing for Saigon, whilst Vietnam could be representing Singapore. An interesting concept and superbly executed. Approximately 200 players and supporters are flying in for the event, which is expected to draw local supporters as well. The Bangkok team is taking an entourage of almost fifty people.
Saigon has not even got it’s own pool league yet, it is hoped that this competition may prove to be the catalyst for one starting up. The players mainly play at the Red Bar in the heart of Saigon’s District 1. They are made up of an impressive list of nationalities. Australia, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Romania, Scotland and Singapore are all represented in the 18 strong team of players.
The idea behind the tournament is to promote friendship and business links between all participants, though the main emphasis is on fun and much as it is pool. Bangkok have won both preceding events and they have assembled a formidable team once again. They clearly will start as favourites, though Jakarta will be strong and Vietnam Shanghai are rumoured to have greatly improved this year. It will be a big ask of the Saigon team, who are obvious underdogs.
All the players are extremely proud to be representing both Saigon and of course Vietnam in an event that is being televised live in Indonesia and also streamed over the internet to all of Southeast Asia. Two of the big bars in District 1 in the city, The Red Bar and Bar 5, have already said they will be holding big screen parties and streaming it live. It is creating quite a buzz around Saigon and TV and press are already showing an interest.
The team flies out to Jakarta on Thursday 12th September and will return on Sunday 15th. It is quite an honor for them to have been invited to this event so early on in it’s development. Many other teams have requested to be entered and Saigon were asked by the organizers.
This will generate excellent publicity for Vietnam in general and Saigon in particular. Players are aware of the responsibility involved when representing a City, in this way. The travelling teams draw great support at airports, as they travel in team colors. The Saigon Legends are ready and the countdown has begun.
