Those without the Virgin Media or affiliate programs will pay small fee for service
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/18/2012 -- Virgin Media's Wi-Fi services have added Notting Hill Tate, Seven Sisters, and Camden Town, as the London Underground added 20 more stations in connection to the conglomerate.
With the addition, there are now 92 Wi-Fi enabled stations with 28 more station due to enter the foray in early 2013.
Passengers can access Wi-Fi within the station, ticket halls, escalators, but the service will not work within London Underground tunnels.
"Thousands of our customers are already stations to keep up-to-date with live travel information, news and entertainment. The arrival of Wi-Fi at these extra 20 stations will allow even more of our passengers to connect to the net while they are on the move across London," said Gareth Powell, director of strategy and service development for London Underground.
Virgin Media stated that 800,000 persons have registered for Wi-Fi service with the company. The service is free throughout 2012, but will become a pay service sometimes early in 2013.
The company announced that EE and Vodafone were considered wholesale partners for the Wi-Fi service of London underground. With that, EE, T-Mobile, Orange, as well as Vodafone customers (along with Virgin customers) are capable of accessing the services for free in 2013 forward.
Customers that do not use the aforementioned services will pay for the service. A daily Wifi pass will cost £2, weekly run a customer £5, while a monthly pass will cost passengers £15.
The services that were most recently added include: Belsize Park, Chalk Farm, Highgate, Mornington Crescent, Balham, Clapham Common, Oval, Clapham South, Lancaster Gate, South Kensington, Swiss Cottage, Bounds Green, Finsbury Park, Holloway Road, Russell Square, Turnpike Lane and Wood Green.
Steve Townsend, CIO of the The Transport of London, made a statement to Computing that Wifi would enable TfL's staff to manage the transport network much easier, and simultaneously benefit commuters.
