Visit a Piece of Ouray's History

Ouray is full of richly fascinating, historic places to explore, including ghost towns and mines that once promised great riches. The classic Ouray County Courthouse is another notable place that still stands to this day.

Ouray, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/19/2019 -- Built in 1888 by Frank Carney, Ouray County Courthouse is a unique merger of architectural styles, mostly Queen Anne and Romanesque. The first floor of the courthouse is where the county clerk and treasurer offices are located, and they have remained since the courthouse opened in the late 1800s. The long wide central hall has a large collection of historic photographs that have been taken throughout Ouray over the years. Up on the second floor, visitors can see the 40' by 56' district courtroom and its eighteen-foot ceiling. In keeping with the courthouse's historic nature, the room has several classic furnishings.

During the 1970s, Ouray County Courthouse grew in size. The building attached behind the courthouse was the former home of the county jail. Today, the space is used by the County Sheriff's Department as an office.

Ouray County Courthouse was also used during a scene in the 1969 American western film True Grit starring John Wayne.
