Reduced costs, adaptability behind rise in usage
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/20/2012 -- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), with its ability to lower telecommunications costs and to adapt to any size business, large or small, is poised to shake up the telecommunications market in the coming years.
Consumers and business owners alike see the potential in the Internet-based communications method. While many people accept that VoIP cannot completely replace land-based telephone communication, it can become a significant part of telecommunications setups worldwide.
Ovum, a research group that is part of Datamonitor, recently released the results of a new study. The data expressed that VoIP is poised to have a substantial impact on the leading telecommunications companies during the next few years.
The main threat to the telecommunications market, is that VoIP can potentially reduce the commitment people have to certain telephone numbers, according to Ovum principal telecoms strategy analyst Jeremy Green,.
"Operators should use telephone numbers as the identifier and address for cloud-based services, allow customers to choose numbers that are relevant to them and develop more application-to-person SMS applications," Green said.
According to the report, voice traffic is remaining at a steady pace, although much of it is switching to new platforms, which is resulting in reduced revenue streams for the leading telecommunications companies.
Telecommunications companies need to adapt to the new technology to survive, Ovum’s report says. Some telecommunications providers have decided to focus their efforts on competing on price of their current technology as they have a dim view on the future. According to Green, many "commercial realities and opportunities" lie in the VoIP sector for those companies, who should take advantage of them quickly.
VoIP growth is forecast to continue as it has already shown to be a positive influence on many businesses already.
