Board votes to fix roof of jail and courthouse
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/02/2012 -- A bid for the repairs to the 100-year-old jail roof was approved on Wednesday so that work could begin in the coming weeks.
The decision was made to repair to the two buildings after an 11-2 vote in favor of using $11,000 discount of repairing the entire roof of the jail, rather than replacing a section. The total cost of the project will be $120,000.
Only a portion of the courthouse is being restored at a discounted price. The discount is being given as part of a deal for fixing both portions simultaneously.
Board members Marvin Hawk and Stephen Johnson were the dissenting voices on the board and Chairman of Building and Grounds Committee Russell Stanton expressed concern over the cost if the project is taken on at as whole and at once.
Despite the work being discounted, it would still be cheaper to replace only portions of the jail. “We’d be $11,000 better off. However, it would put a big whole in our piggy bank,” Stanton said.
The funds for the project will come from a sale of the Regional Office and Education building.
“We have money — the catch is how you wish to allocate them,” said Michael Pearson, finance and legislative committee’s chairperson. “Basically, the county offices fund was created long, long ago when there was revenue sharing...essentially, it’s a nice pot of funds that have sat there for a long time and is to be used for equipment and capital expenses. “This is a capital expense.”
A specific timeline for the repairs has not been released. It was determined previously that Renaissance Roofing could begin work within 20 days.
