Multi-tenant option capability expected to be the key marquee innovation in the 12c
Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/17/2013 -- Redwood City, California-headquartered Oracle Corporation has announced the general availability of Oracle Database 12c, the first database claimed to be designed specifically for the cloud.
At the educational webcast for Database 12c held on the 18th of July 2013, Oracle’s Senior VP, Andrew Mendelsohn provided a lengthy overview of the 12c. He started off by asking what were the key things one needed to do to be successful on cloud. Currently while moving into the cloud, customers would obviously want better analytics, better consolidation, better data warehousing, better availability. But along with these, Oracle feels they would also want something called ‘multi-tenancy’.
At the event, Andrew Mendelsohn, went into further detail on ‘multi-tenancy’ by stating that “the key marquee innovation in 12c is something we call the multi-tenant option which is this capability we think is critical for cloud which is the ability to support multiple organizations, sharing the same database in a securing isolated fashion”.
Database 12c also comes with some new exciting features. Oracle Multitenant is the newest of them. He explained the primary objective of Multitenant of trying “to build a virtual database, virtualization technology that lets you view both hardware consolidation like virtual machines that you do and reduce the total number of databases you need as well which attacks the operational cost problem”.
On the topic of the business impact the 12c could have, he went on to note that Oracle has over the years monetized innovations through these database options and with Multitenant they think it has the potential to be the largest database option ever by far, much larger than the largest option today, namely Rack and partitioning. He also went on to share what they were hearing from customers on the 12c saying that “Oracle's multi-tenant feature is a great technology for supporting dev and test environments, we support high performance cloning of databases and so we think that market opportunity is going to be available right away and we think that the really huge opportunity there is huge numbers of test dev databases out there”.
Later in the event, BofA/ML’s Kash Rangan throws a question to Andrew Mendelsohn around the upgrade cycle for the 12c, to which he replies that a certain percentage of customers could go to the 12cR1 and then everybody would go to the 12cR2 when that is released.
