What to Do After a Hurricane

The start of hurricane season is right around the corner which serves as a reminder of how important it is to know what steps to take should a major storm strike South Florida.

Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/26/2019 -- If a major storm causes damage to several homes, homeowners can expect insurance companies to become inundated with claims. The longer a person waits to file a claim, the longer the wait for an adjuster to visit the property, survey the damage and have the home repaired. It is not unusual for the entire process to take several months.

An adjuster may visit a home and only conduct a short, superficial inspection of the damaged home. There is also the possibility that they won't closely examine the damage, such as by taking a closer look at the roof to check for any issues. Make sure the adjuster inspects all damage and if they overlook something, jot down everything that the person may have missed.

Many homeowners are under the false impression that they are required to accept an insurance company's estimate. Though it is not always the case, insurers try and close as many claims as possible within a short timeframe, which means the true cost of repairs may result in the repairs being undervalued. If the homeowner feels the estimate is not justified, there may be the option of disputing it.
