Tops the list for obese Indian cities
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/01/2013 -- A recent study has pointed out that Kochi top's the list of cities in India when it comes to obese people. The Kochi times was thus prompted to explore the reasons behind the phenomena.
Malayalis have been proud of their simple nutritious food habits and lifestyle choices; however, a recent study is proving this may not always be the case, and Kochi tops the top Indian cities in terms of obesity rate. That prompted Kochi Times to look into the matter to see what it was in the city that was allowing the weight problem to subsist.
The company found that the lifestyle of the Keralites have made a shift in recent decades, and according to the nutritionist Mamtz Khalid, the primary reason for obesity is that the individual who have started eating more energy-dense foods has risen dramatically.
"A woman had come to me for a weight loss program. She was ready to diet on weekdays but on weekends, the family had to eat out," says Mumtaz.
But it is not just about eating out, according to Mumtaz, as people are more willing to try a variety of cuisine these days. This has occurred in other areas in India, but the major difference in Malayalis is that the non-vegetarian population does not consume salads and other mineral-rich foods. Northern Indians are known for their vegetarian diets, which consistent of a higher concentration of roughage and metabolism-raising foods.
Another cited reason for the rise is the stress levels of Malayalis, which is known to make people more susceptible to weight gain when food is available. This is due to food allowing for hormones to be released that lower stress levels.
"Unlike in Kochi, a good number of people in other metros are forced to walk at least short distances as they depend on metro trains and other means of public transport," says Sam George, an executive with a multi-national company. Lakshmi G, 27, a software professional, says Kochi is fast becoming a major IT hub, and our sedentary lifestyles combined with unhealthy eating habits pave the way for obesity at an early age. "There is no time for regular exercise, even if we want to," she adds.
