Women More Likely to Take out College Loans Reports Logbook Wonga

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2013 -- In new research, women were found to make good on student loans as a whole. The data shows that those women who take own loans actually make it to graduation more regularly than their male counterparts. Still, at a certain point, debt has diminishing returns and becomes a less effective boost for the chances of graduation.

One reason for the loans helping women more is that it may be tied to a job prospect for college dropouts for men, which are more plentiful than for women, according to researchers.

"At least early in their careers, women suffer more than men if they don't have a college degree," said Rachel Dwyer, co-author of the study and associate professor of sociology at Ohio State University.

"Women will go deeper in debt to finance college because they need the degree more than men if they want to earn a good living. Men will drop out at lower levels of debt," Dwyer said in a statement.

Dwyer, along with Randy Hodson, professor of sociology at Ohio State University, and in coordination with Laura McLoud assistant professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University. Their study was published in the journal Gender and Society.

The data collected from the research noted that 3.676 young Americans participated in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. The work interviewed persons between the ages of 13 and 17 in 1997, and talked with those same individuals in the years 2010 and 2011. At that time, the young adults were between the ages of 25 and 31.

The study noted that researchers examined the student loans that were taken out by each of the enrolled participants, and how much they owned overall in their loans. Women were found to be more likely to take out loans than the men, with 40% compared to 34% taking out loans on average each year.

"Clearly, educational debt was part of the college experience for many students in the 2000s," Dwyer said.
