Unmarried men promoted slower than married men
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/01/2013 -- There have been studies that prove women live longer and stay healthier due to marriage, however there may be one particular area where women are not improved due to marriage: getting a promotion at work.
According to a new study by the American Historical Association, married women in the history profession wait longer to be promoted than their unmarried male counterparts. Married and unmarried male history professors are promoted faster than female counterparts, regardless of marital status.
Following a survey of more than 2,000 professors, researchers discovered that the married female history professors were only promoted at an average of every 7.8 years. Women who were never married were promoted after an average of 6.7 years, while unmarried and married men were promoted at 6.4 and 5.9 years respectively.
The most interesting piece of information from the study showed that female professors believe they are being treated fairly at a low 55.4% agreeing rate. Men stated agreement at 84.7% overall.
The study seems to be shedding light on the possibility of female professors take the longest to get ahead in the field. More women have reported that they have taken a leave of absence for birth of a child, child-care reasons, or left in order to support a spouse.
Seth Rockman, an associate professors at Brown University, noted The Atlantic: "This explains why marriage accelerates a man's career. If men can continue to find wives who will abandon their professional aspirations to assist their husbands, well, that's it in a nutshell."
