World Famous UK Comic Print 'Desperate Dan' to End on Its 75th Birthday Reports PeanutPrint.co.uk

Westfield North, Cumbernauld -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/19/2012 -- The final printed issue of the UK’s longest running children’s comic will be ending on its 75th birthday in December.

“The Dandy” will close on its 75th birthday, the comic will only be gone from the print format. The team behind the comic has expressed the commitment to taking the comic online.

The Dandy is best known for cartoon character, Desperate Dan, who is being pulled from shelves following a drop in circulation in recent years.

The comic had a high of selling two-million copies in the 1950s, while it was only able to circulate 8,000 in the current year. The decision came after D.C. Thomson announced that it was going to carry out a review of all its magazine titles due to the challenges faced by the publishing industry.

The Dandy was launched in 1937, and has featured characters such as Bananaman, Korky the Cat, Cuddles the Dimples, and Beryl the Peril.

Ellis Watson, chief executive of the company’s publishing operations stated, "On December 4, we'll publish our 75th anniversary edition - and now that the cat's out of the bag - I can confirm that this will be our last print edition,” she said. “It’s what comes online. That will set the tone for the next 75 years and that's why I'm so livid these plans nearly leaked. I'm absolutely livid that we've had an internal leak about what's in the pipeline for one of our most popular titles. We’re counting down 110 days until the big 75th anniversary bash and we're working on some tremendously exciting things.”

In dedication to one of the longest running comics, a bronze statue of Desperate Dan can be found in Dundee city center, alongside Minnie the Minx.
