Summerville, SC -- (SBWire) -- 07/25/2016 --In a study conducted by a group of Oncologists who are members of the American Urological Association, the risk of having prostate cancer is high for those who have ovarian and breast cancer family history. It was found out that men who have family members who have this history should go through deep screening process to check for prostate cancer, particularly if the cancer in the family is linked to BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation.

Those carrying BRCA2 gene mutation are more likely to acquire prostate cancer. The said study identified BRCA as a great tool that can be used to identify who would benefit from previous treatments and more belligerent types of treatments. BRCA mutations have significant roles in a lot of prostate cancer cases.

The said study yielded the following results:

1. With 261 men tested positive for BRCA2, it was found out the these men are more possibly to have cancer multiply throughout their bodies but are diagnoses once the cancer is already on its late stage. This is compared to men who were tested negative for BRCA2 gene.

2. Blood samples from 857 prostate cancer patients were collected and it was found out that black prostate cancer patients are more likely to have BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation as compared to the white prostate cancer patients. The black patients are also more likely to have cancer spread as compared to the white ones.

3. Men who were diagnosed with breast cancer and were treated for that have about 30% higher likelihood of developing prostate cancer.

This study significantly reveals that prostate cancer is not just one disease, but rather it is a type of many diseases that need specialized and personalized treatment. Genes matter a lot in the type of cure that should be given to prostate cancer patients.

Statistically speaking, there are about 5% - 10% of prostate cancer cases that are brought about by hereditary associations. Having male relatives who have prostate cancer should be a red flag especially if one is male. Checking for prostate cancer should be done seriously as acquiring the disease has very high probability. The same goes with having female relatives who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.
