Dubai, UAE -- (SBWire) -- 12/03/2017 --IIMSAM, the Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-Algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition, Intergovernmental Observer of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, commemorates the United Arab Emirates' 46th National Day, which falls on December 2nd, 2017.

On this special occasion, IIMSAM would like to acknowledge the UAE's role in humanitarian work, where the UAE is on the top of the list of donors for humanitarian support, development assistance and relief operations.

Through its charitable and humanitarian efforts and institutions both within the UAE, and outside, the nation's contribution to humanitarian causes worldwide has become increasingly prominent.

The UAE has been named, by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the "world's largest donor of development assistance in proportion to its Gross National Income (GNI)", a position that was formerly held by France.

The UAE has donated AED 19.4 billion in official development assistance, forming 1.34 percent of its GNI, and exceeding the United Nations' target of 0.7 percent.

In addition, the UAE has played a vital role in funding and supporting the WHO's operations and research in polio, provided aid of over AED 600 million towards the crisis in Syria, and is a signatory of the The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol.

"The Union of the UAE has made the nation a firm entity for a more prosperous future under a rational leadership that understands well the importance of preserving, developing and stabilising the country. On this auspicious occasion, it is most necessary to acknowledge the great role and contribution of the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the founding of the UAE," said H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Musallem Bin Ham Al Ameri, Deputy Secretary General of IIMSAM.

H.E. Dr. Bin Ham also added, "The Union has given the people of the UAE great attention and provided them with all the means to achieve their aspirations."

He pointed out that the UAE attaches great importance to foreign humanitarian assistance, stressing that it is one of the most active countries in terms of international humanitarian action, at the Arab, Islamic and international levels.

Its great initiatives in various issues with a humanitarian dimension in the world, such as war and political asylum, regardless of geographic or religious, ethnic or cultural differences, make its contribution even more significant and an example to follow globally.
