The number of people affected by flu at the beginning of 2013 was high compared to the previous years. The intense flu season benefited sales of analgesics, which are used to treat various flu symptoms, such as headache and high fever. However, analgesics is a mature and saturated category in Switzerland and there continued to be a shift from systemic analgesics towards topical analgesics/anaesthetic. In order to save money, many Swiss consumers visit the doctor to receive a prescription rather than purchasing OTC analgesics in chemists/pharmacies. This trend continued in 2013.
Competitive Landscape
Vifor Pharm AG and Bayer (Schweiz) AG continued to lead analgesics in 2013. Vifor Pharma is by far the leading player in the ibuprofen category, where it recorded a 64% value share in 2013. Ibuprofen sales have strongly increased over the review period and Vifor Pharma's leading brand, Algifor, is a popular and trusted ibuprofen product in Switzerland. Algifor increased its value share by one percentage point in 2013 to extend its leadership. Perskindol is another popular brand by Vifor Pharma. Within the topical analgesics/anaesthetic category, it ranked second and posted an 18% value share. Bayer (Schweiz) AG is the leader within the aspirin category; its brands Aspirin C and Aspirin are particularly strong in the aspirin category, where they ranked first and second respectively in 2013. The vitamin supplement in Aspirin C proved to be successful in 2013, showing an increase in value share.
