There are tubes in place which suck the blood from the infant's bodies which then runs through an oxygenator before being put back into the bodies.
All of this has been developed at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for the much more admirable purpose of allowing for premature babies to stay healthy and alive in the future.
