Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWire) -- 11/22/2013 --Actors who have been looking to establish themselves in the lucrative world of commercial acting have long relied on Carolyne Barry, a master acting teacher based in the Los Angeles area. Now Barry is pleased to announce unique techniques that actors can use to get hired for more commercials.
“I’ve been offering my commercial workshop classes since 1982, and I’ve been personally recommended by agents, casting directors, and former students ever since,” says Barry. “Many actors who are interested in working in commercials need to approach their search differently than with movies, theatre, and television shows, which is where I come into play.
“Many of my students have used the techniques I offer in workshops to land lucrative national commercials – in fact, they’re as recognizable as any famous movie star,” she adds with a smile.
Barry provides her students with a multitude of industry techniques and tips for finding commercials and other work, many of which include the following:
- Only work with a SAG-franchised agent. A non-SAG agent who insists that he or she can still get you work cannot be held accountable by the SAG for their poor behaviors and unethical practices, so ensure that you don’t hire this person to find commercial work for you.
- Network with as many industry professionals as possible to find the right agent to represent you. Ask about the best ways to contact them, and if anyone you know might have an “in” to get represented.
- Always check to see if an agent has any complaints on the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org).
- Once you have a shortlist of the agents you’d like to pursue, submit your picture, resume, and cover letter to fifteen or twenty agents at a time. Make sure these are your first choices, and ensure that at least some of these agents are from smaller agencies who might be more interested in “new” talent. Wait for a few weeks before submitting your details to your second-tier choices.
If actors don’t hear from agencies after this time period, Barry recommends re-shooting new photos and revising their resumes.
“Never stop submitting your information, as client rosters change all the time,” Barry points out. “This means that an agent who wasn’t interested in you three weeks ago might suddenly want to get in touch with you now.”
