London, England -- (SBWire) -- 11/16/2011 --After all, Roman artefacts and coins have been found at the site, Saxon remains of a decapitated man were excavated in 1923 and mentions of Stonehenge exist in the work of scholars from the Middle Ages.

Take a Stonehenge tour from London and delve into its mysteries. Theories as striking as they are unusual about how Stonehenge was in fact built have constantly been around. Three particularly fascinating theories are:

The Legend of Merlin

The legend goes that Merlin brought the stones to Salisbury Plain from Ireland after the perfidious Saxon leader, Hengest, slaughtered 300 British noblemen. Aurelius Ambrosius, the high king, wished to craft an appropriate memorial to the men who had been massacred. Merlin suggested that the Giant's Ring stone circle in Ireland be relocated to Britain, and this became Stonehenge.

Edward Duke

Edward Duke was the first person to correlate astronomy with Stonehenge, claiming that Stonehenge itself served as a planetarium suffused with noteworthy astronomical calibrations. He also argued that specific stones seemed to line up with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset.

Erich von Däniken

Perhaps von Däniken’s theory about Stonehenge has aroused the most contention in the modern age.

According to Däniken, either extraterrestrials, or humans who benefited from the guidance of extraterrestrials, created Stonehenge.

Additionally to this, he claims that Stonehenge is a model of our solar system, true to scale, including the asteroid belt.

Nowadays the monument attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, with a large crowd gathering to see the sunrise at the summer solstice. Theories as to the original function of Stonehenge continue to circulate.

Which theory do you subscribe to? Which sounds most convincing? Or do you discard all three of these hypotheses? They are, after all, amongst the most colourful. Perhaps a Stonehenge coach tour can elucidate things for you; possibly a visit to the momentous landmark itself will help you to come to your own conclusions as to why Stonehenge was built.
