The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix. Strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most of the cervical cancers. Squamous cell carcinomas, adenocarcinomas, and adenosquamous carcinomas are three types of cervical cancers. Squamous cell carcinomas develop from cells in the exocervix while adenocarcinomas develop from gland cells. The cancer cells are said to have features of squamous cells under the microscope. Adenosquamous carcinomas feature both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas.
