It was not a pleasant condition! The intermittent claudication made it extremely difficult to do much, so I really had become a prisoner of my home and garden. The exercise was out of question, my legs could not cope, but it was expected that each leg angioplasty cure the problem. It did not.
My high blood pressure, I was assured, could be treated with a cocktail of drugs and weight loss. The cocktail of four different drugs worked, but I could not lose weight.
So, I was given a choice: my blood sugar can be controlled either with drugs or diet. I tried alot of diabetes medications, natural diabetes drugs, some extreme diets plan, all of these did not work. It rather increase my weight and elevated my blood sugar level. I said to myself, since I was already ingesting four different blood pressure medications, I decided to try to control my diet. I was also hoping that this would help me lose weight also. But where do I start? That was when I stumbled on this book "How To Reverse Diabetes Now" by Matt Traverso. After reading the entire eBook in less than 5 hours, it took me that long because the eBook is voluminous and contain some revealing and shocking videos which I had to take time to watch. Without wasting time, I began to apply the tips mentioned in the book. I remember that my nurse gave me a blood glucose monitors, and said efforts should be made to stay below 9 as my reading. My doctor said to stay less than 7, but it is now reduced to less than 5. While my current long-term low is 5.3. A sharp decline in the high readings I use to have. So what have I done? At first, I took blood samples three times a day and I was really surprised how my blood sugar jumped around. Plain oatmeal and water, which I loved, would produce a reading of 16 and still a multigrain slow-release, I always thought it would be good for my health. One apple, showed a reading of 12! Tea with milk but no sugar, 10. Of course, there was more to this than meets the eye.
The first lesson is that the body needs water and lots of it. I exit sugary sodas and start drinking clear boiled water. The Swedes call it Silver Tea, I am told, and it is very refreshing. Now begins a cup a day and two or three others follow. Low calorie tonic water is also useful (quinine helps prevent cramping), mineral water (I particularly like the gaseous forms), low calorie ginger beer and cold tap water filtered.
The next crucial point of learning: controlling intake of carbohydrates, in my case less than 40gm per day. Remove bread, cakes, candies, pasta, rice, cereals, crackers, sugar, fruit juice, potatoes, honey, jam, baked beans. Read food labels is a revelation!
Instead, increase your consumption of vegetables and foods low in carbohydrates and fruit. All the following are especially good: broccoli, cabbage, spinach, beans, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, kohlrabi, squash, celery, green salad. Fruit can be very high in sugar, so use sparingly. Choose rhubarb, grapefruit, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, each of these are okay. Do not add sugar, of course, rather sweeten with cinnamon instead. Avocados are low in carbohydrates but high in fat, consume no more than half of fruit per day. Add nuts and seeds to your diet, again in small quantities.
As to alcohol, all beers are gone. One or two glasses of red wine a day is acceptable.

Avoid processed foods as much as possible, and certainly not to eat hydrogenated fats of any kind. They are in my opinion, a con of the food industry and of no use to anyone other than manufacturers of processed foods.
Buy only original, non-reconstituted lean meat, poultry, game and fish. Reduce intake of saturated fat cooking, and level the excess fat. Cook with oil that contain olives and nuts, these unsaturated fats are good for you. Don't ever use lard. Add game to your range of ingredients as well as plenty of oily fish and white ones, like salmon, haddock, tuna, swordfish, mackerel, and kipper.
I've never been hungry once with this change in my eating habits to a simple whole foods. I still find it strange to eat yogurt, ice cream and various cheeses. But sometimes I get a pleasure - as long I stay within my limits.
The results are good for me:
My good cholesterol is high
My bad cholesterol is low
My blood sugar of type II diabetes is well controlled with diet
I lost 10 pounds weight.
My next task is to lose another 30 lbs. I know now that it is feasible. The more weight I lose, the more I increase my activity level - and more incentive I have to control my calorie intake. Finally, I feel I'm regaining control over my body and discover that you are really what you eat!
