In the year to January 2011, the total number of service stations in Ireland fell marginally to 1,487. Total fuel volumes sold in 2010 fell by 7.8% on 2009, following a year-on-year decline of 3.0% in 2009. Petrol consumption decreased by 9.7% in 2010. Consumption of diesel fell less markedly, at 4.0%.

The top five players by fuel volume share (Topaz, Texaco, Esso, Maxol, and Applegreen) account for over 60% of the entire Irish service station network. Topaz is the largest player by network size and fuel volume share. There are seven motorway sites in Ireland, of which, six operate under the Applegreen brand and one belongs to Topaz.

A shop is located at two-thirds of the national service station network in Ireland. Maxol and Topaz have partnered with national grocery groups allowing them to operate their shops at the fuel retailers' sites. Maxol has even extended its partnership with Mace for five years under a EUR225m deal.
