AstraZeneca's Atacand (candesartan) blocks the binding of angiotensin II to its receptor, inhibiting the effects of angiotensin, which include vasoconstriction, synthesis and release of aldosterone, cardiac stimulation, and renal reabsorption of sodium. It was launched for the treatment of hypertension in 1998 in the US, Europe, and Japan. In Japan, it is marketed by Takeda under the brand name Blopress.
