Capitol Broadcasting Launches ESPN Deportes 1550 AM

24-Hour Spanish Language Sports Radio Network Now Available in Triangle Market

Raleigh, NC -- (SBWire) -- 10/06/2009 -- Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) has announced the launch of ESPN Deportes Radio, 1550 AM (WCLY), adding to the Triangle sports radio programming the communication company currently offers. ESPN Deportes Radio has been serving Hispanic sports fans in the U.S. since 2000 and offers a variety of sports talk programming and events, highlighted by exclusive, national Spanish-language broadcasts of Major League Baseball, Mexican League Soccer, UEFA Champions League and NASCAR. ESPN Deportes Radio 1550 AM in the Triangle will be the only affiliate in the Southeast region outside of Florida and Knoxville, TN.

Launching ESPN Deportes Radio 1550 AM allows CBC to serve the sports listening needs of the area’s growing Hispanic population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population, the largest minority group in the U.S., reached 45.5 million on July 1, 2007. In North Carolina alone, there are more than 640,000 Hispanic residents.

“We understand the strong interest in sports throughout our region and want to offer quality programming to the very diverse sports fan base in the Triangle,” says Brian Maloney, General Manager of CBC’s sports radio properties. “It is exciting to be able to offer the first Spanish-language sports station to serve our growing Hispanic community in the Triangle.”

In August, CBC announced it would expand its radio sports coverage in the Triangle by acquiring 620 The Bull (WDNC), WCLY and the rights to the sports programming on 850 The Buzz (WRBZ). The addition of these stations will complement Capitol’s 99.9 The Fan – ESPN which signed on with an all sports format in Fall, 2007. The launch of ESPN Deportes 1550 AM (WCLY) is the first move in the sports radio programming restructuring.
