Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressively debilitating condition which can, nonetheless, be significantly improved by incorporating a well-designed ckd kidney disease diet program into a conventional treatment.

The basis of a healing approach to the treatment of CKD is a diet which includes foods that have the ability to improve kidney function. Such a diet should be low in sugar, salt, sodium, protein and potassium and high in fiber.

A diet rich in fiber will tremendously aid the restoration of kidney function. Though the word comes from the Latin fibra, meaning fiber, thread or filament, fiber, or dietary fiber, is not a fiber at all. It is the chemical substance in the cells of plant foods that cannot be digested by the human body, and is found in all types of plants.

A diet rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber is essential and immensely beneficial to people with CKD as well as those on dialysis, because chronic kidney disease is an inflammatory condition and a number of recent scientific studies have confirmed that high dietary fiber intake lowers inflammation. This is because together, soluble and insoluble fiber perform a wide range of functions.

Soluble fiber, which dissolves in water and becomes gelatinous as it goes through the digestive system, is essential for regulating the blood sugar and blood pressure. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, does not change its form as it passes through the digestive system, and functions to keep the digestive system in optimum working order.

A fiber-rich diet also has several other benefits for people with CKD. Fiber, also known as roughage, prevents constipation, promotes regularity and prevents hemorrhoids by increasing bulk and water in the stool. Another desirable benefit of increased fiber intake is that it can also assist in weight control, since fiber, apart from being delicious, is also very filling. In addition, the School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom has published research which suggests that a fiber-rich diet lowers the risk of first-time stroke, and can even contribute to an increased life-span.

People with stage one and stage two kidney disease would benefit from following a healthy fiber-rich diet. At this early stage, though the kidneys are able to remove waste, fluids, potassium and phosphorous, a person can be susceptible to high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), protein in the urine (proteinuria), high cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and inflammation. Following a high-fiber diet can significantly improve these conditions, preserve kidney function for a long time, and even reverse kidney disease.

However, people with chronic kidney disease should consume fiber rich foods which are also low in potassium, since it's common for people suffering from CKD to have hyperkalemia, higher than normal levels of potassium in the blood. Hyperkalemia can cause irregular heartbeats and possibly cardiac arrest.

Though such a diet should be carefully planned in order to meet an individual needs, and should seek the help of a knowledgeable and experienced program, a person should be aware of some of the beneficial ingredients to include in meals.

Good high-fiber, low-potassium foods include strawberries, pears, plums, spinach, lettuce, mushrooms, pineapple, peppers, cauliflower and radishes.

Apples, one super food that should be in the diet of everyone with CKD, contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. However, the focus should be on increased fiber intake in general, and not the type of fiber.

Other good fruit choices for people with chronic kidney disease are blueberries, blackberries, cherries, raw pineapples, figs and grapefruit. Good veggies are asparagus, beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, raw cabbage, carrots, cauliflower and eggplant.

With all these great food choices, following a high fiber diet can be not only healing and wholesome, but fun to prepare and delicious as well.
