Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a major complication of diabetes and the most common foot injury in diabetics. Given the increasing prevalence of diabetes, coupled with the aging population, the burden of complications related to diabetes, such as DFUs, is also likely to increase over the next 20 years (Boulton et al., 2005).
