According to The History of Franklin Lakes, NJ, the Lenape Indians arrived in the area during the seventeenth century. Their camp was situated near Buttermilk Falls. The Indians found sustenance by fishing in Franklin Lake. At the time the lake was referred to as Micharagrape Pond. Dutch settlers started to gradually populate the area. Michael Hawden acquired the land around the pond in 1701.

By 1772, the township of Franklin was established. Dutch settlers started to build sturdy farmhouses from the hardwood floors up. Currently fourteen of these original historical houses still exist in Franklin Lake. Commerce started to thrive including sawmills, gristmills, tanneries and forges. Churches and blacksmith shops were erected as well as two hotels and two railroad depots.

During the twentieth century, estate houses and mansions appeared in the area. Often these posh homes were owned by people who generated wealth from the industrial revolution. By 1922, Franklin Lakes became independent from Franklin Township and its first mayor was elected. Soon single family homes were built. By 1980, there were 8,500 residents in Franklin Lakes.

The population of Franklin Lakes boomed to 10,422 by the 2000 census. Home continued to be built and commerce grew. Residents had new homes built to make their own decisions about flooring, paint colors and more. The strong pioneering spirit of the past continues today. Franklin Lakes ranks seventeenth among the highest income areas of the United States.
