Vimana by System Insights Teams with Machinist Skills for Efficient Manufacturing

Berkeley, CA -- (SBWire) -- 01/15/2014 --A machinist is a person who can manually make parts using machine tools. The role is considered different, especially by expert machinists, than operators since they have honed their skills and has the ability to understand when the machine is operating correctly using their training and experience. The machinist often considers themselves an artist and their skills and training allow them to create remarkably complex parts with high accuracy.

According to Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights, “We need to take a step back from the technical issues and look at the real crux of why manufacturing has not been quick to adopt this technology and the cultural issues one faces trying to add value to a well-established industry. Unlike relatively recent industries like computer data centers, manufacturing is thousands of years old. There have been great advancements, but relative to other technologies, it is slow to change. A lot of that has to do with the skills and training of the people performing the tasks.”

It has been understood for a long time that the machinist has the ability to detect machine tool aberrations using sound, vibration, and other inputs and intuit the difference between a good cut and a bad cut. They also know how to correct the process by making subtle changes to the operating parameters of the machine. Therefore, there is a signal that is being generated by the machine tool that indicates the quality and the success of a particular operation. “Using technology we can collect that sensor data and correlate it to the operations of the machine over multiple runs and determine when to alert the machinist to the issue before time is wasted. The difficulty is determining what signals are being generated,” added Sobel.

The human mind is incredibly good at processing multiple simultaneous signals and recognizing patterns, speech is one case where machines are only now being able to do a rudimentary job, still much worse than your average human.
