Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 02/21/2014 --In terms of written premium, the Netherlands' insurance industry is one of the global leaders. During the review period (2008-2012) the nation's reinsurance segment registered negative growth due to the adverse effect of the global financial crisis and subsequent European debt crisis. Overall, the premium ceded to reinsurance recorded a review-period compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -2.3%. The life and personal accident and health insurance segments held retentions above 90%, indicating an underutilization of reinsurance as a risk management tool. Moreover, the non-life segment, which previously displayed a reliance on reinsurers for the purposes of sharing risk, recorded a decline in the percentage of premium ceded from 18.9% in 2008 to 15.8% in 2012. This was due to intense competition in the segment, which forced non-life insurers to reduce premiums.
