Traditional Toys Hold Their Own in the Increasingly Technological Playroom

Oxfordshire, UK -- (SBWire) -- 03/07/2014 --Children are quickly moving on from the LeapPad type device to more sophisticated models such as the iPad and Kindle, and Tesco’s Hudl was a sell out success in the run up to Christmas last year. It is not only tablets that have seen a huge spike in sales. Last year’s best selling toy in the UK was the Furby, a talking ‘robotic’ teddy bear that delighted and exasperated children and parents in turn across the country.

In recent years, sales of toys such as electronic tablet devices have seen an enormous increase, as the market has extended to include not only adults but children too. An increasing number of children - from as young as two or three years old - now have their own tablet on which to play games and online apps. Children are quickly moving on from the LeapPad type device to more sophisticated models such as the iPad and Kindle, and Tesco’s Hudl was a sell out success in the run up to Christmas last year. It is not only tablets that have seen a huge spike in sales. Last year’s best selling toy in the UK was the Furby, a talking ‘robotic’ teddy bear that delighted and exasperated children and parents in turn across the country.

However despite the rising sales in technological toys, traditional toys such as teddy bears are as popular as ever. According to Lianne Fisher at ReadyTeddyGo “It is no surprise that more traditional toys are still proving popular with children these days, they encourage creativity and imagination during play which helps with their personal development and lets face it who doesn't like playing with Lego!

The enduring popularity of teddy bears and other traditional toys is due to a number of reasons. Unlike like tablets or Furbys, traditional toys such as teddy bears, skipping ropes or yoyos don’t need their batteries charging. Traditional toys are far more difficult to break or damage than their technological counterparts. And, despite the tremendous range of applications available to download onto ones tablet, with a traditional toy such as a teddy bear there is actually more opportunity for choice and diversity at playtime, because traditional toys promote open ended and imaginative play. A teddy bear can be a pupil in a school, an injured patient, a superhero, a just a cuddly friend to snuggle up with. The play possibilities are literally endless!

Children may be turning on their tablets in their droves but this does not mean the end of traditional toys and sales figures bear this out. Parents need not be too worried that their child seems to be so attached to the tablet - there is plenty of space in the playroom for both technological and traditional toys.
