Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 04/25/2014 --Perhaps inevitably, no new significant players entered the Canadian mobile market as a result of the auction of 700MHz spectrum in early 2014. The three incumbent national players took the majority of the spectrum, with cable-focused Rogers laying claim to the most valuable properties in the hope of adding lustre to its converged services portfolio. Meanwhile, the government blocked the sale of spectrum, owned by defunct NextWave, to a Bell-Telus joint venture and reinforced its commitment to nurturing competition by blocking Telus' bid to acquire struggling new entrant Mobilicity. Fellow newcomer Wind Mobile is willing to act as market consolidator, but Mobilicity would add little value to its already questionable relevance to the competitive dynamic and, in any case, Wind itself can bring little financial muscle to bear: it forbore from bidding in the January 2014 auction, perhaps acknowledging the futility of attempting to compete head-on with the Big Three. New data from the regulator confirm that the status quo barely changed in 2012, a view already held by BMI.
