Hoodoo Zephyr Back in Action with Fierce Blend of Folk and Punk Rock

Scotland’s own Hoodoo Zephyr rock a folk punk groove that can be heard on their upcoming album and recent single, “Paracetamol,” which is also featured on WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 5.

Las Vegas, NV -- (SBWire) -- 06/06/2014 --Hailing from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, punk-folk rock quartet Hoodoo Zephyr have turned the genres on their heads to create a sound that at one moment rocks a crowd to a frenzy and another soothes them back down with songs that croon with their rich Scottish heritage. Building the foundation for what they’ve dubbed “polk”—or a cross between punk and folk—Hoodoo Zephyr has returned from an eight-year hiatus to reinvigorate their band’s beloved sound and share it with the rest of Scotland and the music world.

Originally formed in 1997, Hoodoo Zephyr is comprised of four members (including a newly added bassist): Freak on vocals and rhythm guitar, Geoff Sharp on lead guitar, rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Ken Taylor on drums and percussion and Stuart Bull on bass and occasionally vocals. The original group disbanded when Freak moved to France and Holland but regrouped after eight long years with a renewed dedication to the great music they once made together. They’ve now returned to maintaining diligent practicing, gigging and recording schedules even while fighting brutal Scottish winters.

Each band member brings his own musical influences to the table, including everything from Beefheart, Frank Zappa and Grateful Dead to Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses, Black Sabbath and The Specials. With these influences, combined with their own backgrounds and individual musical pursuits, Hoodoo Zephyr has created a sound that has been compared to the likes of Green Day (“but better,” according to some fans) and New Model Army. But when it comes down to it, their cultivation of polk and the harnessing of their own subtle uniqueness has allowed them to craft a sound that truly stands on its own. And even after a long hiatus, the band has created a sound that remains fun and relevant in the modern music era.

In addition to musical influences, Hoodoo Zephyr also has lyrical inspirations that run the gamut. Freak is the main lyrical writer, and he draws from a wealth of colorful life experiences, flavored perceptions of life and the universe and a literary background. Songs have been inspired by everything from the death of a cat and giving up smoking to ancient Celtic poetry and spells, a mirror on a Parisian subway, 18th and 19th century romantic poets, motorbikes and even Facebook feeds. All of these inspirations have come together to create a fun and vibrant set of music, including their debut EP Egg, that has garnered the group much fame and acclaim since their victorious return.

With their track “Paracetamol,” Hoodoo Zephyr join a host of other international talent spanning a wide range of genres on WiFi PR Group’s compilation, Indie Anthems Vol. 5, recently released at Coachella in April 2014. The digital mixtape was handed out on 3,500 download cards to festival attendees, and 1,500 more copies are now available on the Indie Anthems Bandcamp website.

As for future endeavors, their latest 11-track album, tentatively entitled either Polk in Yer Eye or Hoodoo Too, is set to be dropped in June or July 2014.

Currently, Hoodoo Zephyr are selling their five-track Egg CDs at their live performances, but they plan to make their new album available on online distribution sites like iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and others yet to be confirmed.

Their YouTube page is under construction, but they have posted a video for their upcoming single “Paracetamol.”
