Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 06/12/2014 --Like many other OTC consumer health categories in Iran, the official OTC list for dermatologicals contains very few products while a high number of non-OTC alternatives are available. These alternatives include many different types of hair loss treatments which are classified as toiletries to various different forms of antifungals which are not available through OTC channels in Iran. This resulted in relatively low value growth for OTC dermatologicals towards the end of the review period. The category recorded current value growth of 12% in 2013, a slower rate of growth than the 18% current value CAGR recorded in the category over the entire review period. In reality, the consumption of OTC and Rx dermatologicals has increased significantly in Iran in recent years due to the rising awareness of these products among Iranian consumers.

Competitive Landscape

Pak Darou Co remained the leading player in dermatologicals in Iran in 2013 with a 13% value share. This company was followed closely by Tolid Daru Co, also with a 13% value share, and Iran Najo Pharmaceutical Hygienic & Cosmetic Co with 9%. The main reason for the relatively high value shares of Pak Darou Co and Tolid Daru Co is each company's high levels of production of povidone iodine 10% 250ml, which is used widely in Iranian hospitals and clinics as a topical germicidal/antiseptic.

Industry Prospects

Dermatologicals in Ian is expected to increase in value by 1% in constant 2013 terms over the entire forecast period, a slight improvement upon the 2% value decline recorded in the category in constant 2013 terms over the entire review period. Iranian consumers are expected to continue visiting their doctors when faced with a variety of skin problems and this is likely to result in them being given prescriptions for Rx products, negatively impacting sales of OTC dermatologicals over the forecast period.
