On the one hand, this was due to the government taking stronger measures against illicit trade, which has risen in Egypt since the uprising as security in the country deteriorated. On the other hand, innovations such as flavour capsules in addition to more attractive packaging also supported a more positive performance. Flavour capsules proved especially popular among the younger smoking population.

Competitive Landscape

State-controlled Eastern Co is the only company authorised to produce cigarettes in Egypt, whereas other companies can only import their products or have Eastern Co produce their brands under licence. While Eastern Co used to be wholly-owned by the Egyptian government, recent years have seen a gradual shift towards more diversified ownership. In 2013, 55% of the company was government-owned, 5% was held by a shareholder association and the remaining 40% of shares belonged to public and private companies, banks and individuals.
