New Market Research Report: Womenswear in Argentina
New Consumer Goods research report from Euromonitor International is now available from Fast Market Research
Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 08/11/2014 --Several factors affected womenswear in Argentina during 2013. Import barriers driving leading international brands to leave the country and a worsening local business environment and accelerating inflation having a negative impact on consumer confidence and purchasing power all defined the dynamics during 2013. Brands including Cartier, Escada and Ralph Lauren among others started leaving the country in 2012 leaving some room for local producers to increase their share. However, given the lack of scale and credit access to gain in production efficiency, increases in unit prices to a large extent have eroded this opportunity for growth which virtually vanished during 2013 as intermediate goods were also affected by import barriers, hurting local producers' sales by pushing up unit costs with retail selling prices increasing at a faster pace than overall inflation. According to a survey conducted in early 2013 by the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI), the main barriers to growth that local designers face are increasing costs, low brand awareness, lack of financing availability and shortage of qualified employees.

Competitive Landscape
With 76% of its brand value shares in the hands of others and a very low Herfindahl concentration index, womenswear in Argentina is highly fragmented with more than 500 domestic and multinational brands. Although womenswear is mature, company value shares tend to alter in response to sudden changes in the local business environment. Mil Cien SA led value sales of womenswear in 2013, followed by Demibell SA, Zara Argentina SA, Hanesbrands Argentina SA and Kowzef SA (Kosiuko). Mil Cien SA has the highest average unit prices and has been gaining share in value terms thanks to a migration due to other top international brands leaving the country or having a sharp contraction in supply due to the imports lockout. The company also saw the second biggest increase in value sales during 2013 boosted by both increasing demand in volume terms and average unit prices moving up at a faster pace than overall local inflation.
Industry Prospects
Import controls are expected to remain in place or even to be tightened in the short term as Argentina continues to face a large drain in foreign exchange reserves with a mix of high inflation rates exceeding 30% and contracting consumer purchasing power. As womenswear is dependent on imported products, it is expected to continue to suffer from the trade lockout, both of finished products which will hurt international brands and of intermediate products which will limit growth for local companies.
