Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 08/11/2014 --Total volume sales of RTD coffee contracted by 2% in 2013. This is mainly due to the ongoing popularity of freshly brewed coffee by convenience stores. Towards the end of the review period, convenience stores increasingly started to serve freshly brewed coffee at counters in their outlets with the aim of stealing consumers from specialist coffee shops and fast food categories.

Whilst the business of coffee by convenience stores proved to be successful, it mainly stole consumers from canned RTD coffee, whose main consumers are male consumers. Male consumers, who tend to drink canned RTD coffee when smoking, replaced canned RTD coffee with freshly brewed coffee offered at convenience stores in favour of its better taste and reasonable price.

Competitive Landscape:

Coca-Cola (Japan) maintained its leading position in RTD coffee with a 22% total volume share in 2013. Although the company's leading brand Georgia lost volume sales, the company's wide network of vending machines allowed the brand to keep selling the most within RTD coffee brands. The company launched Luana, RTD coffee in PET bottles, in 2013 with the aim of capturing female consumers who tend not to drink RTD coffee. Although Luana successfully captured female consumers, the repeat rate for them to purchase the brand was low, as more innovative products under other categories stole consumers.

RTD coffee is expected to keep declining at a 1% total volume CAGR over the forecast period. The ongoing popularity of coffee offered in convenience stores is likely to keep impacting the sales of standard-sized RTD canned coffee. Convenience stores are now increasing the number of their outlets that they can offer freshly brewed coffee services and the awareness and understanding towards the service will be improved amongst consumers. The migration from RTD coffee to freshly brewed coffee available at convenience stores is expected to further accelerate during the forecast period.
