Overall apparel accessories posted a poor retail volume performance in 2013 due to the combined effect of the performance among the various types of apparel accessories. Ties and other apparel accessories, which together accounted for 7% of total apparel accessories sales in value terms in 2013, have been negatively affected by import restrictions on international brands and increasing costs of raw materials and labour for local manufacturers. Furthermore, both local and international brands have been heavily affected by a sharp contraction in inbound tourism of 23% from Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

Competitive Landscape

Within apparel accessories brands, others saw the biggest increase in value share in 2013 driven by a proliferation of low-cost local and foreign brands with designs similar to top brands at less than half the average unit price. In the context of contracting purchasing power in Argentina, other brands have gained share at the expense of top brands such as Kio and Kardinal.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of apparel accessories are predicted to gain strength from 2015 onwards as policy corrections are expected, as import barriers have been delivering the contrary effect than expected by fuelling domestic prices and reducing supply. Sales are expected to expand at a volume CAGR of 2%, less than half of the volume CAGR seen over the review period due to contracting demand in real terms with inflation rates exceeding 30%.
