Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 08/22/2014 --In mid-2012, Colgate-Palmolive acquired the Pico Jenner, Biodent and Bactident brands from Laboratorios Abarly (Abarly SA) - the most important domestic player in oral care. Even though the brands continue to be treated independently and products continue to be manufactured by Laboratorios Abarly (Abarly), there is no evidence of Colgate-Palmolive formally announcing the acquisition in Uruguay or taking control of the brands. Laboratorios Abarly (Abarly) continues to have a solid reputation amongst professionals and has a product portfolio that complements that of Colgate-Palmolive. It continues working much more aggressively with dentists, orthodontists and hygienists, visiting them more often and marketing new products. During 2013, Laboratorios Abarly launched a new softer toothbrush Pico Jenner soft plus and super soft plus. Even though the Pico Jenner brand traditionally promoted harder toothbrushes, some patients engage in oral hygiene with hard or shabby toothbrushes and apply excessive force when brushing. This damages the tissue, causing inflammation that eventually leads to gum (encia) and bone loss.

Competitive Landscape

Colgate-Palmolive remained the undisputed leader in oral care value sales with a 60% share in 2013. The company maintained its comfortable lead in sales of toothbrushes and toothpaste, the two largest categories which accounted for 77% of total oral care sales, and has an important presence in dental floss and leads mouthwashes/dental rinses sales. Sebamar ranked second in 2013 with a 14% value share rising thirteen percentage points from the previous year with its Oral-B brand, providing products in manual and battery toothbrushes and dental floss. The largest increase comes from battery toothbrushes, which, even though volume sales are still low, the unit prices are at least five times those of regular toothbrushes and demand is increasing as mouth care concern rises and electric and battery toothbrushes provide a much better result in the long term.

Industry Prospects

The current trend that is fuelling the growth in oral care sales will be sustained during the forecast period delivering a 6% CAGR from 2013 to 2018, down almost three percentage points from the review period CAGR. This decline is expected as the economy is becoming weaker, which will also affect oral care. Moreover, after several years of economic growth that was above average in the region, economic deceleration is therefore also expected to impact oral care.
