Roof leaks will severely damage a home

In most cases, these leaks are the result of localized damage, such as missing or cracked shakes or shingles, or if a flat roof is cracked or blistering in a specific area. The most difficult part of repairing this type of damage is finding its point of origin.

Below are helpful tips for not only finding, but also fixing various leaks that occur in residential roofs. Always keep in mind that working on a roof it can be dangerous, so proper safety precautions should be taken.

Repairing Shingle Roofs

Shingle roofs are typically the easiest to repair. Look for the damage at the area of the leak. Look for any missing, curled or damaged shingles. Also inspect any area where any two surfaces meet and around vents and chimneys.

Once the shingle issue is located, repairs can begin. For curled back shingles, simply reattach them with asphalt roof cement. If there is a shingle missing, rotten or torn shingle, it will have to be replaced completely. To replace a shingle simply remove the damaged shingle and lift the edges of the shingles around it, removing the nails. Slide the new shingle into place until the back edge is beneath the row above. Fasten the new shingle with the appropriate roofing nails.

Repairing a Flat Roof

A flat roof is built up with layers of roofing tar and felt. A leak will typically occur at a low spot where the roof felt is damaged. In the majority of situations the leak will be right below the damaged area, which makes it easy to find. It is important to mop up any pooled water and allow the surface to dry. After it is dry, brush off any gravel and look for cracks present in the felt or for larger blisters where the top layer has become separated.

To fix a blister slice it open with a utility knife. Lift up the edges of the blister, soak up any water that is present and then prop open the edges of the blister to allow any other water to dry out. Once it is dry, spread a thick layer of roof cement on the blisters bottom edges and press it down. Once the blister is closed, put galvanized roof nails on each side of the slit and then put more roof cement on top of the blister.

All types of roofs will require different fixes. For more difficult leaks or ones that are not easily found it is important to call in a professional roofer. These issues will only become worse as time passes, so they should not be ignored.
