The key feature of the Malaysian market is the rapid growth in non-duty paid cigarette sales which now account for more than a third of the overall market. This has been in response to excise rises which have caused the duty paid market to grow and decline in a cyclical fashion. 2012 saw growth of 2.7% but 2013 is forecast to see a 6% decline taking the legitimate market down to 14.3 billion pieces. Per capita consumption has more than halved since 1990.

This is a market dominated by the multinationals. BAT leads on 58%, followed by JTI (19.5%) and PMI (16.2%). Dunhill, Winston, Marlboro and Salem are the leading brands, the former accounting for 45.9% of the market in 2012.
