The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) are happy to announce their continued support for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in under-privileged communities. One of the ways SHPE draws awareness to these needs is through their annual “Noche de Ciencias” which has recently been announced for October 18, 2014.

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWire) -- 09/29/2014 --It's a sad fact that in many under-privileged predominantly Latino communities, there is a great need for more emphasis on critically important Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. A huge part of the problem, in the eyes of many experts, is the lack of understanding that the problem even exists. Stepping up to do their best to address this concern is the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) of Greater San Fernando Valley. SHPE sponsors and hosts their annual flagship event “Noche de Ciencias” (Science Night) in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of STEM education in the communities that need it most. The response to past events has been wildly enthusiastic.

“It is imperative that we improve the dismal representation of Latinos in the STEM fields,” commented Frank Barragan, President, SHPE Greater San Fernando Valley. “The future of our country as a technology leader depends on it.”

According to SHPE, over 200 local students are expected to participate in the local science night. The intention of the event is to help inspire and develop interest and curiosity in STEM among students, while also driving home the importance among Latino families of these important educational areas. This is done through a series of fun and interactive workshops led by local educators, college students, and STEM professionals.

Admission is free and food and beverages will be provided.

The event is set for October 18, 2004 and will be held at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar, CA from 3pm to 7pm.
