Delray Beach, FL -- (SBWire) -- 10/03/2014 --It was a birthday celebration honoring those who made a commitment 50 years ago to ensure Delray Beach’s significant history was not forgotten.

With more than 200 guests on hand, the Delray Beach Historical Society hosted a 50th Birthday Celebration to recognize the small group of residents who came together in 1964 and created the organization, which today is now more than 300 members strong.

“Our community-wide birthday party was a great success,” said Delray Beach Historical Society Executive Director Winnie Edwards, a Delray Beach native whose father was one of the founders. “It was one more way of thanking those original charter signers for recognizing the importance of preserving our history,”

On hand for the celebration were two of the founders – Roy Simon and William Gwynn – and William Williams, grandson of Ethel Sterling Williams, a driving force behind the creation of the historical society.

Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein and several other elected officials joined the celebration, at the Historical Society’s campus on the corner of Swinton Avenue and Northeast First Street. Glickstein noted in his remarks to visitors the importance of community support for the society.

A highlight of the evening was the cutting of “the largest pineapple cake in the world,” a six-foot by two-foot pineapple-cream cake created especially for the birthday party by the owners of Two Fat Cookies, a bakery in the Pineapple Grove Arts District. In addition, local florist, From Roehm With Love donated 100 fresh Gladiolus to give to the first 100 guests.
