Curcumin Research Shows Promise for Individuals with Depression

Portland, OR -- (SBWire) -- 10/08/2014 --Figures from the National Institute of Mental Health show that depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the U.S., yet 80 percent of all those afflicted never receive treatment. Research has shown that a curcumin supplement is just as effective as many commonly prescribed anti-depressants and may present an alternative method of therapy for addressing a wide range of mental disorders.

“Research published in Phytotherapy Research indicates a 750mg dose of curcumin is an effective alternative to pharmaceuticals that often leave people feeling overmedicated,” said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Everyone becomes depressed occasionally, but clinical depression is far more serious and can last for months or even years. It’s a highly disabling condition, but the symptoms often go undiagnosed. Depression engenders feelings of helplessness and futility that’s exacerbated by chronic stress.

An array of studies conducted worldwide has demonstrated the therapeutic properties of curcumin for people suffering from depression. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, a commonly used culinary spice in East Indian and Asian cuisine.

Research has linked high levels of a specific enzyme to depression. Curcumin has been found to inhibit the enzyme and block the release of proteins that disrupt the body’s stress reactions. Test subjects have shown no ill effects, even after extended curcumin usage.

Another study conducted in Bhavnagar, India, by the Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College concluded that curcumin was as effective as one of the most commonly prescribed prescription medications for people with major depressive disorder (MDD). The study was performed with diagnosed subjects over the course of six weeks.

Depression is considered a mental illness and despite a shift in attitude, a stigma is still attached to those suffering with the condition. In the Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, test results with curcumin showed promising results across the board for mental conditions ranging from depression and Alzheimer’s disease to neuropsychiatric disorders. Researchers concluded that curcumin works to protect neural connections within the body.

Curcumin studies are continuing to reveal new properties associated with the spice to address depression and other mental health conditions. Research has shown it to be as effective as commonly prescribed anti-depressives, leading many to utilize a curcumin supplement rather than relying on costly pharmaceuticals (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
