Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/09/2014 --In Switzerland, optical goods stores expanded rapidly and was the leading channel in eyewear, including the spectacles category. The consolidation intensified as the number of outlets belonging to the large optical store chains rose significantly over the review period. The growing competition increased bankruptcy rates among small and medium sized, independent, optical goods stores. Accordingly, independent businesses, which made up the bulk of the optical goods stores, joined buying groups, without which these outlets would not be able to survive. The largest of the buying group was Dynoptic with 100 members. The leading optical store chains were Visilab, Fielmann, McOptik and Optik 2000.

Competitive Landscape

The two optical shop chains, Visilab, with a value share of 14%, followed by Fielmann, with a value share of 12%, led the competitive landscape of spectacles in 2013 due to their national presence through large networks of outlets. The unique selling point of Visilab was its promise to deliver a pair of spectacles in one hour and in order to accomplish this the company established workshops in every outlet. Fielmann, on the other hand, positioned its unique selling point as high-quality products at low prices. Both used their retail brands as strong umbrella brands for their product ranges. They marketed extensive portfolios of self-manufactured, self-branded product lines, which are not strictly regarded as private label as the companies play dual roles both as retailers and manufacturers.

Industry Prospects

In Switzerland, the ageing population and the health consciousness of the population is expected to continue to increase with consumers paying more attention to eye care. The number of people who work with computers will also grow, thereby creating more vision-related problems. These factors are expected to create higher demand for spectacles, which is set to post a value CAGR of 1% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period.
