Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/10/2014 --Despite the high level of saturation and maturity in analgesics in Germany, the category achieved current value growth of 1% in 2013. Much of this growth was a result of the self-medication trend, which was heavily driven by large-scale advertising campaigns from the major manufacturers. For example, Boehringer Ingelheim invested heavily in television advertising in order to stimulate demand for its Thomapyrin brand. Acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine are all active ingredients in Thomapyrin. Acetaminophen and aspirin both posted a current value decline in 2013, suggesting a shift from systemic analgesics towards topical analgesics/anaesthetic. Nonetheless, there were no acetaminophen medicines which were switched back to prescription status in 2013 despite discussions held by Germany?s regulatory authorities in recent years.

Competitive Landscape:

The two key players in analgesics, Bayer Vital and Novartis Consumer Health, together accounted for a 31% share of value sales in 2013. Bayer Vital held a share of 16%, which can be attributed to its strong position in aspirin. Novartis held a value share of 15%. Much of this was due to the positive development of the company?s Voltaren brand, whose value share grew by more than one percentage point in 2013. Novartis was present with a range of products in analgesics, its two key brands in Germany being Hexal and Voltaren.

Industry Prospects:

Analgesics is set to post a value CAGR decline of 1% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period, with value sales falling to ?766 million. An overall decline in the population and anticipated stalled development of switches over the forecast period will hamper category growth. According to industry experts, an anticipated delay in switches of Rx-to-OTC products in analgesics will limit growth in Germany. The projected decline in Germany?s population will also likely reduce demand for OTC analgesics over 2013-2018.
