Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/16/2014 --Reform of Germany's EEG has proceeded relatively smoothly and is likely to slow the pace and cost of the Energiewende to more sustainable levels. That said, there has been no significant change to the policy trajectory . A s such, w e maintain that the Energiewende will erode German competitiveness and the structural challenges facing traditional utilities will remain in place in 2014 and 2015.

Although reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) may slow the pace of renewables expansion so as to reduce the costs associated with the Energiewende (energy transition), we forecast Germany will continue to register rapid growth in renewable-based electricity generation. As such, Germany will retain its position as a global renewables powerhouse, but this will have significant implications for the economy and structural problems in the utilities sector are unlikely to recede.

While amendments to the EEG will cap growth in renewables at a more sustainable level, Germany's green energy targets are still hugely ambitious and there is little to indicate a change in direction with regards to renewable energy policy. Our view is supported by the fact that the German public remains broadly in favour of the Energiewende, despite concerns that households have borne that cost of the transition while export-oriented businesses have been shielded from the renewables surcharge. As such, our core views remain in play:

A Gradual Erosion Of German Competitiveness: Despite the reforms, the Energiewende will lead to higher electricity prices over the next decade and ultimately damage the competitiveness of German industry. This will continue until Germany either reverses its commitment to renewable energy or adopts a more accommodative fiscal policy - both of which are unlikely under the current government. Furthermore, the government will not be able to protect industry from higher energy costs indefinitely, as workers will ultimately demand higher...
