Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/20/2014 --In 2013, wine continued to register strong growth, rising by 13% in total volume terms. Increases in consumers? disposable incomes positively impacted sales of wine in 2013. European standards of alcohol consumption are developing in Kazakhstan. The consumption of wine, rather than spirits, is becoming the norm, especially on hot days. Demand for healthier alcoholic drinks (consumption of dry wine is increasing at a higher pace than sweet wine) is also developing in line with the trend towards wellness. As a result, the number of consumers of wine increased, with new customer groups beginning to purchase these products. An increase in the frequency of purchases was also noted, with all of these developments boosted by improving living standards in Kazakhstan.

Competitive Landscape

Bacchus is the long term leader of wine sales in Kazakhstan. Making wine since 1948, it holds a product portfolio (present in most alcohol categories) of 72 brands, catering to local consumer tastes at the lowest prices. Its leadership is also due to the brand Sovetskoye Shampanskoye, which holds the highest share in Kazakhstan in the category of sparkling wine. Efficiency (uses juice of the first pressing for the production of sparkling wines, the next pressing for the production of dry wines and the last pressing for blending brandy, which are all held in its portfolio) and technology have not been the only advantages for the company. Its other asset has been its location ? the Almaty region ? closest to the biggest wine market in Kazakhstan of Almaty city. Furthermore, the company has its own specialist stores that sell its wine products.

Industry Prospects

The share of spirits dropped within alcoholic drinks in Kazakhstan during the review period, and this trend is expected to continue. The share of lower alcohol strength drinks, including wine, will continue to increase as a result of the growing interest from global and local producers in this product area. The wine production industry is set to be under the personal control of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and is expected to receive increased subsidies and financing from the government. Consequently, rising domestic production will also aid wine sales. Moreover, due to strong competition within the industry, the quality of local products is expected to improve. These will be the main factors driving wine sales over the forecast period.
