Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/23/2014 --Currency depreciation and a lack of access to credit on favourable terms resulted in a dramatic slowdown in consumer electronics spending in 2013, but we forecast a recover y from 2014 as the economic environment stabilises. BMI has a positive medium term outlook for Egypt's consumer electronics market, with a young population, low device penetration rates, rising incomes and the falling cost of devices to drive growth. We expect government, vendor and operator-led investment in supporting infrastructure such as telecoms networks and retail/distribution networks to further encourage growth and drive accelerating demand for connected devices such as smartphones and tablets. We expect total spending to increase at a CAGR of 6.1 % 2014-2018, with total spending expected to rise from USD 3.3 bn in 2014 to USD 4.0 bn in 2018.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer hardware sales: USD834mn in 2013 to USD893bn in 2014, up 7.1% in US dollar terms. Sales were hit by the economic and political instability in 2013, however, we expect a return to growth in 2014 as the economic environment strengthens and the withdrawal of Microsoft support for XP in April 2014 boosts upgrade sales.

AV sales: USD574mn in 2013 to USD633mn in 2014, up 10.3% in US dollar terms. Flat-screen TV sets were the main driver of growth as the FIFA World Cup in Brazil boosted volumes, but the AV segment will remain the smallest category for the duration of our forecast period.

Handset sales: USD1.55bn in 2013 to USD1.73bn in 2014, increasing 11.4% in US dollar terms. The handset market is the most dynamic in Egypt, boosted by the increased share of smartphones in the product mix, driving up the average selling price of handsets in the market as a whole.
